Prescribing Prism
As part of our comprehensive eye exam, Birmingham Vision Care examines every patient’s need for prism. Prism is helpful for some patients who have difficulty with eye alignment or binocular vision dysfunction.
Prism lenses help the eyes to work together. In some patients, one or both eyes may tend to pull up, down, to the left, or to the right. The use of prism in the lenses helps the brain to think the eyes are working together by shifting the image only slightly up, down, left, or right.
While the benefits can be huge, prescribing prism should be used with caution. Some patients begin to decompensate, meaning patient will need increasing amounts of prism on a regular basis.
Our doctors prescribe prism to those patients that will not need frequent changes allowing our patients to save on glasses remakes and effort.
Often, we prescribe prism in conjunction with vision therapy. The prism is used to help our patients find immediate relief of their symptoms, while vision therapy helps the patient gain the life-long benefits of ocular alignment by eliminating or reducing the need for prism.
